CHARLOTTETOWN - The Island Storm halted the skid and picked up a much-needed 122-117 win against the visiting Saint John Riptide in an Islander Day matinee at the Eastlink Centre.
Franklin Session stepped up his game right off the bat by leading the Storm through a high-intensity first quarter. Session finished the quarter a perfect 3-of-3 from the three-point line and 5-of-5 on field goals. He added a free throw to finish the first quarter with 14-points, while the Storm trailed the Riptide 36-32 after one quarter.
Session turned from offense to defense in the second quarter with a big block that led to two successful Tyler Scott free throws. Scott took the offensive torch from Session in the second quarter, finishing the first half with a team-high 17-points.
A stronger defensive game for the Storm led to a close first half, with Du’Vaughn Maxwell making a key block that led to Session setting up Scott for an easy layup near the end of the half.
The Storm outscored the Riptide 25-24 in the second quarter to head into the second half on an upswing, trailing by just 60-57.
Andre Stringer put his foot on the gas pedal to start the second half. By the end of the third quarter Stringer put up eight field goals and was a perfect 5-of-5 on three-pointers, chipping in a free throw to give him 22-points up to that point.
The rest of the Storm moved the ball well with contributions continuing from Session, Scott and Maxwell to help the Storm outscore the Riptide by eight points in the quarter and take a 90-85 lead into the fourth quarter.
Stringer and Scott powered their way through the final quarter continuing to make timely shots with Session getting back in the action. The Storm moved the ball well and received contributions from everyone on the court.
Stringer finished with a game-high 32-points and the Storm pulled away with a 122-117 win.
