The Island Storm grabbed a 2-1 series lead with a physical overtime win against the Saint John Riptide in game 3 of their first round playoff series on Saturday night at the Eastlink Centre.
Neither team could gain a hold to begin the game and the back-and-forth first quarter finished tied 30.
Al Richter drained a three-pointer to start the second quarter and set the tone. The Storm went 7-7 on the free throw line up to that point to help climb to a double-digit lead at half, 58-48.
The second half showed the desperation in both team’s game as a scuffle broke out in the middle of the third quarter, under the Storm net. Akeem Ellis of the Storm and the Riptide’s Olumuyiwa Famutimi were ejected from the game for coming off the bench to join the scrum.
Jahii Carson and Al Richter led the Storm through regulation, each finishing the fourth quarter with 23-points, but it was not enough as regulation solved nothing and the two teams were forced to go into overtime, tied at 110.
A tightly contested overtime period was almost deafening thanks to the fans, who were on their feet for the home team throughout overtime as the Storm picked up a 130-123 victory.
Jahii Carson finished with a game high 32-points while Anthony Anderson dropped 27-points for the Riptide.
The series will continue tomorrow with Game 4 going ahead 2 p.m. at the Eastlink Centre. Tickets can be purchased at the Eastlink Centre box office, online at eastlinkcentrepei.ca, or by calling 902-629-6625. The box office opens at 10:30am.
