Storm adds veteran swingman before trade deadline

Released: March 15, 2017

The Island Storm has announced Wednesday the signing of 6-foot-7 veteran swingman Akeem Wright.

Wright played collegiately at Kansas State from 2005-07 before embarking on a professional career that has spanned over a decade. He is expected to arrive on the Island early next week.

Last season Wright was a big part of the London Lightning team that finished the season 26-14, ultimately losing in Game 7 of the NBL Finals. He was that team’s third best scorer with 14.6 points per game along with 6.2 rebounds per game on 49.3% shooting from the field.

Coach Joe Salerno feels optimistic about Wright’s potential impact for the Storm.

“Akeem would be one of the bigger signings our franchise has had over the last couple of seasons. He is a proven veteran in the NBL, who will bring a ton of experience to our club.”

The Storm (9-13) finds itself in the middle of a heated race in the standings, looking to stay ahead of the Cape Breton Highlanders (7-14), and to close the gap between themselves and the Saint John Riptide (15-11).

To make room for Wright, the Storm has released guard Jackson Trapp.

Salerno feels that signing Wright addresses some limitations on both the offensive and defensive end of the floor, which had previously been plaguing the team.

“Akeem was a highly sought after free agent by many teams in the NBL this season. He will bring a scoring presence to our front court, as well as some much needed versatility on the defensive side of the ball."

With the NBL Trade Deadline approaching this evening at 11:59 p.m., in addition to adding former Storm guard Rashad Whack earlier this week, Da’Quan Cook has been traded to the Orangeville A’s. In exchange for Cook, the Storm will receive the A’s first round pick in the 2017 All-Canadian Draft and the protected player rights to Dominick Cheek.

Additionally, Storm center AJ Stewart has been activated from the Injured Reserve and is expected to play Thursday when the Miracles visit Eastlink Centre at 7pm.
