Storm adds proven scorer
March 08, 2017
The Island Storm has announced Wednesday the signing of 6-foot-6 forward Akeem Ellis.
Ellis played his college ball at Coppin State (NCAA), and his most recent professional contract was in the NM1, a professional league in France. He also had brief stints in the NBA Development League with the Rio Grand Valley Vipers, the NBL Canada with the Brampton A’s, and the British Basketball League’s Cheshire Phoenix. He recorded scoring averages of 17.1 points per game on 53.3% shooting from the field in Cheshire.
“Akeem could be one of the final pieces to the puzzle for us. As a player he is a Swiss army knife, with the ability to basically play four different positions on the floor. He is another guy that can stretch the floor for us, with his ability to shoot the three, as well as create and distribute to some of our other scorer. Akeem has proven himself in the NBL, and is a big signing for us,” said Coach Joe Salerno.
Ellis is no stranger to Salerno either.
“I had the pleasure of coaching Akeem while on our tour in China a couple years back, so we were able to establish a relationship and in my mind he is a known commodity as to what he can bring to the table for our franchise.”
Ellis will arrive on the Island today and is expected to be in uniform for the team’s game this Thursday in Saint John.
Additionally, Storm center AJ Stewart has been placed on the team’s Injured Reserve with a foot injury. He is expected to be out 1-2 weeks.
