CHARLOTTETOWN - The Island Storm prepare for a big road trip to Ontario this weekend, where they’ll take on the Niagara River Lions, and then the Orangeville A’s.
It’s the first Ontario road-swing for the Storm and won’t be an easy one, with both opponents in the upper half of the Central Division standings.
Coach Joe Salerno knows this road trip will be tough, but believes the Storm can win both games after the team’s performance against the Riptide last weekend.
“I feel like we found our niche a bit, and took a step forward in the right direction that game. We need to play that up-tempo, unselfish style. When we play that way, we have an awful lot of weapons at our disposal.”
The Storm recieved a big boost Friday, with word that Terry Thomas will be suited up and able to play tonight.
The team's biggest challenge should come Sunday when the team faces the second place Orangeville A’s. The A’s have two players, Rahlir Jefferson and Justin Moss, that sit second and fourth respectively in league scoring.
Salerno said in order to stop Orangeville’s talented offense, the Storm’s defense will have to be at its best.
“We have to limit them in transition, make Jefferson work for everything in the half court. For Moss, we have to limit his second chance opportunities and play him as straight up as possible.
“They’re a talented offensive team, we just have to put the breaks on them, and then be efficient on the offensive end.”
Going into the weekend, Jahii Carson said the player’s mindset is just to continue playing good, hard, basketball.
“We just have to play Storm basketball, which is defending hard, getting out on transition, and pushing the tempo of the game,” said the point guard “This weekend is going to be a big challenge, but we have guys who look forward to big challenges.”
The Island hits the court tonight in St. Catherines for a 7 p.m. (8 p.m. AST) tip against the River Lions. They then head to Orangeville for a 2 p.m. (3 p.m. AST) start against the A’s. Both games are available live on YouTube.
