Storm add veteran presence

Released: January 17, 2017

The Island Storm announced Tuesday the signing of forward Da’Quan Cook, a former starter with the Niagara River Lions.

Cook signs with the Storm after spending last season in Niagara where he averaged 13.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

Storm coach Joe Salerno says Cook will add a veteran presence in the frontcourt and provide valuable scoring inside.

“He is a proven player in this league coming off a very solid season with Niagara.”

To make room for Cook, the Storm has released Leon Gibson.

“Unfortunately Leon wasn't going to be the fit we had hoped for. We had very high expectations for him coming into camp, and we just didn't see enough consistent play from him on a day-to-day basis. We certainly wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Cook, a 6-foot-9 New Jersey native, was a two-year starter at St. Bonaventure University where he captured the 2012 A-10 Basketball Tournament championship before competing in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

After college Cook travelled the world playing professional basketball with stops in France, Columbia, UK, Morocco and Bulgaria before playing in the NBA D-League with the Maine Red Claws.

Cook had opportunities to play in Europe and in the D-League this year but when the Storm reached out to him he felt it was the right fit.

Salerno is throwing him straight into the fire and looks forward to getting him into practice.

“I think he will be a nice addition to our ball club.”

Cook is looking to bring energy to the ball club and wants to have a large presence on the court.

“I want to be a great guy on and off the court and ultimately I want to bring a championship to the Island.”

Cook is expected to begin his Storm career against his former team, the River Lions, in Niagara on Friday.

The Storm’s next home game is Thursday Jan. 26 against the Cape Breton Highlanders. Tickets can be purchased at the Eastlink Centre box office, online, or by phone.
