By Carson Deveau:
The Island Storm is bringing back a familiar face with the re-signing Tirrell Baines.
The 6-foot-6 power forward from Laurens, South Carolina is excited for another season with the team and has been working at his game and improving his body for the upcoming season.
“Last year I had a lot of injuries, so I wasn’t able to be there for my teammates and coaches at every practice or team events. Hopefully by working on my body, I’ll be able to start the season strong and have a good year.”
Baines was a force in almost every game he played for the Storm, averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in over 25 minutes per contest.
Baines said another reason he’s excited to be back with the team is the opportunity to play in front of the loyal fan base the Storm has in Charlottetown.
“The fans are a lot of fun to play for. They were there for us through the bad times, and celebrated with us during the good times. That loyalty means everything to me and I’m glad we have it from our fans.”
The fans aren’t the only ones who’ll be happy to see Baines back with the Storm this upcoming season. Storm coach Joe Salerno said bringing back Baines is a great addition to the team because he never quits on the court.
“He’s a team-first guy, who goes to battle night in and night out. He also brings a toughness factor to our team. He really proved to us last season that he can be a consistent inside scorer, but he does so much more for our team than just score,” said Salerno.
“T (Baines) does a lot of the little things right that helps put the team in a good position to win, and we are very excited to have him back.”
Looking ahead to the season Baines plans on bringing the same intensity he did last year, but looks to improve upon each element of his game.
“My individual goal is to do what I did last year, but at a higher level and become more dominant.”
You can catch Baines and the rest of the Island Storm on Dec. 26 when they open their season at Charlottetown’s Eastlink Centre.
