Storm to host first-ever Purple Game Sunday

Released: March 18, 2016

The Island Storm will be sporting a different look at their home game Sunday; for the first time in franchise history, the team will not be wearing a white, orange, or blue jersey during a game.

The first-ever Purple Game in support of Family Violence Prevention Services of PEI will see players and fans alike dressed in purple to show their support for the organization.

“We welcome the opportunity to partner with the Island Storm in bringing greater community awareness to the issue of family violence,” said Philip Matusiewicz, Executive Director of the not-for-profit.

“It is great to see a professional team and its athletes taking a leadership role in supporting family violence prevention.”

The purpose of the game is to raise awareness for all of those who suffer from physical, sexual, and emotional violence. Money raised from the game will go towards victim outreach and support.

The Purple Game theme isn’t a new concept to the National Basketball League of Canada, the London Lightning have hosted one for several years and have seen great success.

“I think it’s important for the league as a whole to recognize when someone does something great, and try to build off of it as well,” said Storm owner Duncan Shaw.

“This game enables the Storm to raise funds and awareness for a very important cause and we’ll look at doing something like this again next year too.”

The charity has been busy the past several weeks selling tickets for Sunday’s matinee, they will receive half of all sales through our new fundraising program, in addition to all profits from the 50/50 sales.

During the game fans will also have the opportunity to purchase these game-worn jerseys by form of a silent auction in the lobby.

We would like to thank All Star Cresting for supporting this initiative by donating these jerseys at cost.

The game against the Moncton Miracles is scheduled to tip-off from Eastlink Centre at 2 p.m.
