Storm re-sign NBL Rookie of the Year Rashad Whack

Released: September 28, 2015

Coming off a sensational first season of professional basketball, the Island Storm have re-signed the 2014-2015 National Basketball League of Canada Rookie of the Year, Rashad Whack, for the 2015-2016 season.

“Rashad was one of our top priorities in re-signing for this upcoming season,” said head coach Joe Salerno. “I couldn't be happier to have him back. He is exactly what we look for in players both on and off the court.”

The 6-foot-3 point guard played in all 41 games with the Storm last season, averaging 12.2 points, 3.5 assists, 1.4 steals, while shooting 43.4 per cent from the field and 78.9 per cent from the free throw line.

“I'm excited to be returning to the best organization in the NBL,” said the 24-year-old. “The Storm family welcomed me with loving and caring arms. I am thankful and honored to be returning.”

The Hyattsville, Maryland native stepped up in a huge way for the Storm in the 2015 playoffs. His numbers improved to 15 points and five assists in 10 contests against the Saint John Mill Rats and Halifax Rainmen. He finished the postseason with a 16.10 efficiency rating, third on the team behind Brandon Robinson and Nick Okorie.

“Whack will be one of our go-to guys this season. We asked him to do a lot last season, including changing roles or positions multiple times due to other injuries on the team, and he did it with flying colours,” said Salerno.

Whack began his college ball in 2009 at George Mason University where he spent two seasons before transferring to Mount St. Mary's University. In his final season as a member of the Mountaineers he averaged 17.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists with a 46.7 field goal percentage.

Whack’s marquee game of the regular season came on December 20, 2014 against the Moncton Miracles when he went off for a career-high 29 points on 9-of-16 shooting accompanied by six assists.

Now looking ahead to his second year of pro basketball, Whack is ready for the challenge.

“My rookie year is over, now it's time to really make so noise.”
