The Island Storm have announced the signing of 6-foot-7, 235-pound, forward Ike Azotam, who will join the team for training camp in December.
The 24-year-old Boston native is entering his second year of professional basketball after a successful college career at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
“I’ve done the research and P.E.I. is where I want to play. This team has a history of winning and I want to be a part of something special,” said Azotam.
While at Quinnipiac he was certainly special. As a member of the team’s starting five for three consecutive seasons he was an elite scorer and rebounder. In his final year at the school he averaged 16.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, and shot the ball nearly 50 per cent from the field.
“Ike is a tough, hard nose, physical player, who has a great mid-range game and isn't scared to mix it up a bit in the paint,” said Storm coach Joe Salerno. “He is a double-double guy, someone who can get you 10 and 10 every night, and pose a mismatch problem to other teams.”
Azotam is coming to the Storm after one year of professional basketball in Spain. As a starter for the Marin PeixeGalego he averaged 13.9 points and 6.6 rebounds while shooting better than 55 per cent from the floor.
“He is coming off a great rookie season in Spain, and I think he will only be better in his 2nd year as a pro,” said Salerno.
Looking at what’s ahead, Azotam just wants an opportunity to learn and play.
“I will take advice from the more experienced players and try to use that in any way possible. I’m a tough player on the court but I always try to have a good attitude. I’m excited. I’m ready to go.”
