Originally from Barre, Vermont, Joe Salerno will be entering his 6th season as the Head Coach and Vice President of Player Personnel for the Island Storm, a chartered member of the National Basketball League of Canada.
After spending numerous years coaching at a variety of different levels in Vermont, Salerno received his first professional coaching job in 2008 as an assistant with the Vermont Frost Heaves of the PBL (Premier Basketball League) in the United States. Salerno was promoted to Head Coach in January of 2009, and was named the PBL’s Coach of the Month in March of 2009.
Following the conclusion of the 2010-2011 season, Salerno signed with the Island (formerly Summerside) Storm to become the franchise’s first head coach, in the inaugural season of the NBL Canada.
Now entering his sixth season at the helm of the Storm, Salerno is the longest tenured head coach in the National Basketball League of Canada, and the only coach to still remain with his franchise since the NBL’s inaugural season in 2011. On January 29, 2016, Salerno became the NBL’s All-Time winningest coach in league history when he surpassed Michael Ray-Richardson with his 102nd NBL Canada win.
He led the Storm to back-to-back Atlantic division championships and births in the NBL Canada Finals in 2013 and 2014. Along the way he was named head coach of the NBL Atlantic Division All-Star team on back-to-back years (2013 and 2014), twice named the NBL Canada Coach of the Month (January 2013, January 2015) as well as receiving the NBL Canada’s Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2013. The Storm have been a consistent contender in the NBL, maintaining their dominant presence in the NBL’s Atlantic Division, having made it to the conference finals 3 of the last 4 seasons. Salerno now holds an overall record of (127-115) (0.524) in his professional career, where he will be entering his 8th season as a professional head coach at just 34-years-old.
As the VP of Player Personnel, Salerno has been responsible for the successful recruitment of players from some of the best collegiate conferences in the world including the Big East, ACC, Big 10, Pac 12, and SEC. He has also directed successful player combines in cities such as Memphis, TN, Baltimore, MD, Brooklyn, NY and Chicago, IL. He and the Island Storm have produced 13 NBL All-Stars in the past four seasons, including four first team All-NBL Canada players, two All-NBL Defensive Players of the Year, and one NBL Canada Rookie of the Year recipient.
Salerno has also been the director of all Island Storm Youth programs since his start with the franchise in 2011, including the Island Storm Summer Camps, Storm Skills Academies, and the Island Storm Next Level Development program.
He has been a guest speaker at numerous events over his career, including the Sports PEI Leadership Conference, Holland College’s Sports and Leisure classes, UPEI, Local High Schools, and countless basketball camps and clinics throughout the North East in the United States.
Coach Salerno currently resides in Cornwall, PEI with his wife Darci, son Camden (5) and daughter Alexandra (2).
